Occasional bits of history

I was born in Iowa. I know, big deal. Farmlands, blizzards, tornadoes, flooding, all the usual natural disasters that you think of. But sometimes you get surprised at what you find out about your home territory that you never realized, especially if you hadn't been back there in years.

Storm Lake, Iowa is a nice place. It's what you expect from a midwest town, maybe about 9,000 or so in population. I knew it had a hospital (I was born there) and that it was the county seat for Buena Vista. But...

I didn't know that Buena Vista University (which is a private campus) was 100% wireless. They were the first university to provide students with wireless laptops and go that route.

I didn't know that the world's largest wind farm (wind turbines for generating power) was just outside Storm Lake, in Alta. Guess they decided to move away from oil bigtime. *chuckle*

While I did know about RAGBRAI (the Des Moines Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa) I didn't know that they went through Storm Lake in 2001. On my birthday. That might have been fun to enjoy.

Unfortunately, there's really nothing there to call me back to. My grandparents who lived there are dead, my parents moved away from there when I was just one year old, and save for three visits over the years, that's all I can recall. But it's still my hometown, for better or worse.

I thought you called NOLA your hometown. Then again, it's mine. :) Born, raised, living, will die here.

But I'll make a side trip to Dallas.
