A sad evening's news

Anne McCaffrey has died.  According to reports, she died in her sleep at the age of 85.

I met Anne at X-Con in Milwaukee back in 1979.  It was my first trip to a convention outside of New Orleans, my first flight on a jet, and the first time I had ever gone anywhere by myself intentionally.  The convention was a lot of fun, and somehow I ended up being a kind of gofer for Anne during the convention.

After that time, I would call her around Christmas time, an international call that was rather expensive every time.  But I kept it up for a number of years, trading bits of how life was treating each other and never treating her like some literary goddess on a pedestal.  Later I'd see her on Compuserve, and we'd trade very sporadic emails...

Even after all this time, I still have my copy of "The White Dragon", 1st edition, signed and personalized by her.  She was a wonderful person to know, with a lovely sense of humor.  She put up with me, so I should know.  *chuckle*

A glass of irish cream is raised in her honor... rest in peace, dear.  You will be missed by many, and remembered by many, many more.

While I didn't always like her books - often their pace was uneven with very thick, close-set prose which required grasp of dozens of characters - I did love how she always seemed to want to work with other writer trying to break into the industry.

If I could find it here to raise I would. This is a great story to relate in remembrance. This IS a shock to hear.
