It's Oscar Time!

Well, the Oscar nominations are out.  (I know, they were this morning, but this morning I was at McCarran International, Leaving Las Vegas.)  So, let's look at a few interesting bits...

10 Best picture nominations?  Ok... that means five more films to look at.  The ones you expected are there... The Blind Side, The Hurt Locker, Inglorious Basterds, Up in the Air... but Up?  District 9???

Best Actor is going to come down to George Clooney and Jeff Bridges.  Much as I love Morgan Freeman, he's a long shot.

Best Actress looks like it'll be Sandra Bullock (who'll win a Razzie, too!), with maybe Gabourey Sidibe making an upset.

Animated feature I think will be an upset too, with both Disney and Pixar losing to the Fantastic Mr. Fox.  Short animated will be A Matter of Loaf and Death, the return of Wallace and Gromit to the stage.

Best screenplay is going to be intersting, both original and adapted.  On the adapted side, you've got Up in the Air and Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire, but I've got to pull for District 9.  (Why adapted?  Because it's based from the short film 'Alive in Joburg'.)  Original screenplay will come down to The Hurt Locker and Inglorious Basterds.

Best Director?  Give it to the gal that gave up "Strange Days"... Kate Bigelow.  As much as James Cameron has given us yet another major phenomenon of a movie in Avatar.

So much for my opinions...
