27 years ago today...

... two individuals wheeled a large metal object into the Harvey's Casino in Lake Tahoe.  When the object was found outside of offices on the second floor, the casino personnel discovered that the object was a bomb, filled with nearly 1,000 lbs of dynamite.  The bomb was part of an extortion attempt on the casino by a disgruntled player who had lost some $3 million at the casino over the years.

Two days later the police, FBI, military and others had discovered that the bomb was shielded from x-rays, had motion sensors, float sensors, was wired to detonate if any attempt was made to disassemble it, could not be tilted, and had a timing mechanism that could go off at any moment.  It was (as later described) the perfect bomb, and they had to make a decision.  They tried to use a shaped charge to disarm it...

...and a 60' large hole was blown through the casino as the bomb detonated from the attempt.

If you want to read an excellent series of articles on the bombing, you can find it here at the Reno Gazette Journal.

And I have learned that a movie is being made on this, called "Bombing Harvey".

The A&E Networks did this case on an episode of their "City Confidential" series. They had news footage, of course, including the actual explosion. Boom!
