Ivan the Terrible, Update #5

5:40am

The morning projections all have Ivan going into the west side of Mobile Bay. This would mean the eye would be around 70 to 80 miles west of me, just on the edge of the hurricane force winds. I might see some 70mph winds, nothing I hadn't seen before or been through many, many times in the past.

Back in my ill-spent days of youth, I spent one afternoon standing on the levee during a storm in the early 70's (Carmen, I believe) just standing in the winds and rain, and watching the clouds zipping past overhead. I still like watching the weather going past, but prefer to stay inside a nice, sturdy building doing so. Since I'm not paid to be insane the way newscasters are (nor am I insane enough to be a stormchaser) I'll stick to watching things like this either on television or through the window.

Most of our television is coming out of Mobile, so there's a lot of coverage about the situation in Alabama. And the Weather Channel has some coverage, but it's odd... when Frances and Charley were hitting south Florida, there was a lot of coverage. Ivan hitting Alabama and the Florida panhandle? We'll fit it in between Iraq and Barry Bonds. Now, if Ivan was heading towards New Orleans... it'd be a different tale again.

It's early... more later.
