Nothing like planning a trip...

...especially when the prices keep changing.

Looking at vacation packages online has made me decide that such things are not as good a value as they claim to be. Nor do they seem to have any sort of consistent pricing. So, back to hunting the hard way.

New numbers came up with this:

Airfare on Southwest: 353.40
7 night stay at Stratosphere: 376.22
Total: 729.62

Prices on Travelocity, Hotwire, et. al: Over $850.
Price on Southwest Vacations: ~$850

I think I'll plan this one the hard way. It seems to be a lot cheaper.

Btw, I definitely don't recommend Hotwire. Their site doesn't let you view what hotel you're reserving until after the fact. That in my mind makes them a good candidate for the old bait-and-switch tactic.

When I was buying my tickets to Toronto I was using Air Canada's site. The prices changed within 15 minutes of me staring at the fares trying to decide which return flight to take. Fortunately they went down, saving me about $40. And this was at 11:30 at night. Even the Travel Sites don't have best prices anymore. Intercontinental Hotels Group (Holiday Inn, and others) offer a "best price" guarantee for their own site. They actually have rates available on their own sites lower than Travelocity et al.
