This is London, signing off...

A moment's silence as the voice from America, Alistair Cooke, has passed away.

Radio and television will never again see nor hear a voice and a personality like his. Too often in today's rapid-fire age of sound bites and scripted interviews, his was a throwback, wandering across various topics and making them blend together seamlessly. His was a slow, walking pace through the frantic landscape, taking the time to sit a moment and look at the flowers, or examine an individual from a perspective that few bother to take. Intelligent, witty, urbane, his was a style that will never be recreated nor attempted again sad to say.

So here is to the last of the great voices of radio, reaching across the generations from Winston Churchill's speeches to Kennedy, World War II to the Gulf War, from Park Avenue to Buckingham Palace. Somewhere, out there in the cosmos, someone may be tuning in and hearing these words...

"I want to tell you what it's like to come back to the United States after a sobering month in Britain and say what daily life feels and looks like by comparison."
