Catching the Waves...

So I'm sitting in my room at home, a quiet day along the Florida Gulf Coast, and I'm watching all of the coverage of the earthquake in Chile and the tsunami approaching Hawaii.  And I have to admit that as much as I have a certain amount of grief about technology, this is one of the few benefits of today's interlinked networks and communication networks.

As it's been pointed out, years ago an earthquake in Chile might have been days or weeks before the news reached our ears, and the tsunami that was generated and hit Hawaii struck without any warning whatsoever.  No one knew about the earthquake, and the science of tsunamis was still very much in the infancy.

Today, while the ability to forecast an earthquake is still well out of our ability, at least the ability to predict the tsunami is much better.  And for the most part the Pacific does get sufficient warning... even if nothing happens.  But like a tornado warning, it's better to be safe than sorry.
